Horny Goat Weed's popularity and price has been increasing non-stop for the last decade and that's is not only due to its aphrodisiacal properties. This magical plant has been used for centuries to treat erectile dysfunction and stimulate sexual desire, but it is also commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to strengthen the bones and treat osteoporosis.

Horny Goat Weed and traditional Chinese medicine

Several studies now back up these bone strengthening claims and it's all thanks to a flavonoid called Icariin that is derived from the leaves and stems of the herb epimedium. Icariin has been proven to increase bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip and lower back, and that's why icariin is frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine to help treat osteoporosis. I guess that is awesome news for an estimated 75 million people with osteoporosis in Europe, the USA and Japan! With icariin you have found a proven natural remedy to strengthen your bones and at the same time you enjoy it's aphrodisiacal properties.

Results of a 24-month randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial suggest that epimedium brevicornum maxim may have bone health benefits, with supplementation resulting in increases in BMD of about 1,5% after two years, while placebo led to weakening of the bones.

Epimedium-derived flavanoids exert a beneficial effect on preventing bone loss in late postmenopausal women. Researchers from the Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine and Chinese University of Hong Kong, recruited 85 healthy late postmenopausal women, and randomly assigned them 2 groups.  The first group received a daily dose of horny goat weed derived supplements and the other group a placebo. Women in both groups also received a daily calcium supplement. After 2 years the participants were re-evaluated and BMD at the hip and lower spine had increased by 1,6% and 1,3%, respectively, for the Horny Goat Weed supplement group, and decreased by 1,8% and 2,4‰, respectively, for the placebo group. The difference in lumbar spine between the two groups was significant at both 12 and 24 months, whereas the difference in the femoral neck was marginal at 12 months and significant and 24 months.

The active ingredient in epimedium which is believed to increase sexual function is called icariin, which can be found in standardised extracts in concentrations ranging from 5 to 60%. The majority of the supplements found on the market are all around 10-20% due to the cheaper price of the raw material and that was one of the reasons we decided to specialise in 60% Icariin extracts (the strongest and most effective Icariin extract on the market today).
